Most winters here are defined by rain, not ice. But when an arctic outflow event pushes cold air down from the Fraser Valley and settles over Whatcom County, or a foothill cold snap sits over Sedro-Woolley and the upper Skagit Valley for a few days, homes that never see a real freeze can suddenly grow a ridge of ice along the eaves. That ridge is an ice dam, and it's one of the few winter roof problems here that can cause interior water damage even while the roof covering itself is in decent shape. The risk isn't the ice — it's the pooled meltwater trapped behind it, which has nowhere to go but sideways and up, under shingle tabs and through nail penetrations only ever designed to shed water moving downhill. If you're already seeing a ceiling stain, water at a window head, or dripping inside an exterior wall cavity, treat that as urgent: get the interior moisture dried out to avoid mold, and get a roofer out once it's safe to be on the roof — usually after the ice has softened enough to walk without added damage or injury risk. If the dam is visible but the interior is still dry, it's a same-week call rather than a same-day one, worth acting on before the next freeze-thaw cycle adds another layer, but not worth anyone climbing onto an iced-over roof to chip at it. On a roof under roughly 10 to 15 years old with sound decking, this is often the more sensible and less expensive route, and it targets the actual cause rather than just the symptom.

Replacement, or at least a significant tear-off and rebuild of the eave section, is the more honest recommendation when a dam has been forming for multiple winters, when we find rotted sheathing once the shingles come up, when the original roof was installed without ice-and-water membrane at the eaves at all — common on older homes throughout Skagit and Whatcom counties built before that detail became standard — or when moss has degraded the shingles across too large an area for patch repairs to hold.
