Low-E (low-emissivity) glass is ordinary window glass with a microscopically thin metallic coating baked or sputtered onto one of its surfaces, invisible to the eye but able to reflect heat energy while still letting daylight through. In a climate like ours, where the furnace runs more months than the air conditioner ever does, that coating mostly works in your favor by keeping the heat you paid for on the inside of the house and pushing back some of the summer sun when it finally shows up.
Glass on its own is a poor insulator. A single pane lets heat move through it easily in both directions, which is why old single-pane windows in older Mount Vernon and Bellingham homes feel cold to stand near even when the furnace is running fine. Low-E coatings change that by reflecting long-wave infrared radiation — the kind that carries heat — back toward its source, while still passing short-wave visible light. None of this shows up as a visible tint on quality glass — a good low-E window looks as clear as any other from across the room.

Skagit, Island and Whatcom counties don't deal with hurricane-force wind loads or triple-digit summer heat, so a lot of the marketing language written for other parts of the country simply doesn't apply here. What does apply is a wet, temperate, wind-exposed climate that puts different demands on a window.
Start with the NFRC label on any window you're quoted, not the sales sheet. That label is the one place manufacturers are required to report U-factor and SHGC using a consistent test method, so it's the only real way to compare one window against another. For most homes in this region, prioritize a low U-factor first; SHGC becomes more relevant only on south- or west-facing walls with a lot of unshaded glass, like a sunroom or a great room with big windows facing open water or farmland.
Ask directly about seal warranties. Insulated glass units fail over time when the seal between panes breaks down and moisture gets in, which shows up as fogging or a hazy ring inside the glass that no amount of cleaning fixes. In a climate this damp, over enough years, seal failure is one of the more common reasons homeowners end up replacing windows earlier than they expected, so a strong, transferable seal warranty is worth more here than in a drier climate.
Be honest with yourself about what low-E glass won't do. It won't fix a poorly flashed rough opening, and in a region with this much winter rain, bad flashing or sealant work around the window frame will cause water intrusion regardless of how good the glass itself is. It also won't meaningfully brighten a shaded lot, and on very overcast lots some homeowners find a lower-SHGC coating makes rooms feel slightly dimmer than they'd like, which is a real tradeoff worth discussing rather than an accident. If your home is in one of the colder foothill pockets, or you're simply someone who runs the heat a lot, it's worth pricing out triple-pane alongside double-pane low-E before deciding. Triple pane costs more and adds weight to the frame and sash, so it isn't automatically the right call for every house, but for a home that catches wind and cold on an exposed site, the added performance can be worth the extra investment over the life of the windows.
Yes, though the benefit here looks different than it would in a hot climate. Because our winters are long and our heating season runs for most of the year, the main payoff of low-E glass in Skagit, Island and Whatcom counties is reduced heat loss through the glass during those months, which shows up as a steadier indoor temperature near windows and, over time, lower heating costs than older single-pane or non-coated glass would produce.
It can help but it isn't a guarantee. Fogging on the inside of glass is usually a sign of high indoor humidity meeting a cold surface, and low-E coatings paired with argon gas fill do raise the interior glass surface temperature somewhat, which reduces condensation risk. But a bathroom or kitchen with poor ventilation can still fog even good low-E windows on a cold night, so ventilation matters alongside the glass itself.
For most homes in the lower valley and coastal areas, quality low-E double-pane glass meets Washington State Energy Code targets and performs well. Triple-pane tends to make more sense for homes at higher elevation or in particularly wind-exposed spots, or for homeowners who plan to stay in the house long enough for the added upfront cost to be worth the incremental efficiency gain; it's a conversation worth having project by project rather than assuming one answer fits every house.
Quality low-E glass is designed to stay visibly clear, so most homeowners never notice a tint or shading difference day to day. Where it can matter is on coatings chosen specifically for aggressive solar control, which can very slightly reduce how bright a room feels; on already-shaded or heavily treed lots common around Burlington and Sedro-Woolley, it's worth choosing a coating balanced for our low-sun climate rather than one built for a sunnier region.
